Learn to create wonderful paper-cut beings with Danish artist, Torben Jarlstrøm Clausen, via Zoom.
Join celebrated Danish paper cutting artist Torben Jarlstrøm Clausen who has had several paper cut workshops in Denmark, Japan, and the US. The paper-cut universe of Torben Jarlstrøm Clausen is inhabited by beings who have previously been confined inside the paper. At that time the beings were weighed down by their own and ambient limitations.
In this online workshop, the participants can experience the very best of cutting paper – namely the moment when the paper is unfolded and the magic occurs – that is when the happy paper cut being emerges. Participants will also be exploring the paper cut artwork of renowned storyteller Hans Christian Andersen, and hear about Torben Jarlstrøm Clausen’s own journey to becoming a paper cutting artist.

Meet your instructor, Torben Jarlstrøm Clausen
Torben Jarlstrøm Clausen started as a paper cut artist in 2004. Since then he has exhibited over 110 places in the U.S., Japan, and Denmark and has held numerous workshops in the same countries. He is 57 years old and lives in Odense in Denmark. Odense is where world-famous fairytale writer Hans Christian Andersen was born. Andersen was also a very skilled paper cut artist several hundred years ago. Torben Jarlstrøm Clausen seeks with his paper cuts to maintain and renew this old paper cut tradition.
Torben Jarlstrøm Clausen lives in Odense, Denmark, which is the town where the world-famous fairytale writer Hans Christian Andersen was born. Besides writing fairy tales, Hans Christian Andersen was also a very skilled paper cut artist. Torben Jarlstrøm Clausen humbly tries with his paper cuts to keep the paper-cutting tradition alive today, which Hans Christian Andersen was an exponent of almost 200 years ago.
The Scandinavian Library presents black comedy Persona Non Grata, the meticulously structured life of hip young Danish author Laura or Irina as she now calls herself, (the superb Rosalinde Mynster) is rocked when she returns to her rural family after a long absence.
For several years she has distanced herself from her family in the countryside and established herself as a writer in Copenhagen, living a bohemian lifestyle. When she is forced to return to her childhood home for her brother’s wedding, she discovers that he is about to marry her childhood bully, Catrine.
Laura realizes that Catrine has taken over her place in the family and now she feels a strong need to get it back. It doesn’t take long for conflicts to arise, fed by the seemingly insurmountable differences and a painful history, prompting a series of unexpected events as the two struggle for the family’s approval.
Using elements from her own life, Danish debut director Lisa Jespersen delivers a nuanced and entertaining tale of uncomfortable family relations.

Are you itching to travel this year? How about a Northern Lights trip to Iceland! Come hear more at an information session hosted right here at the SCC. Experienced local guide Samantha Mandel will take you through the details of her upcoming October circuit of the Icelandic Ring Road with other community members, and you’ll have the opportunity to sign up.
This will be Samantha’s seventh trip to Iceland, and she always teaches a full (optional) seminar about this fascinating country before travel. The trip, which will be guided by both Samantha and a local Icelandic guide, will feature Iceland’s stunning natural sights like Northern Lights, volcanoes, waterfalls, geysers, glaciers, and more, and of course lots of insight into Iceland’s fascinating culture & history!

ABOUT JENS: Jens grew up in Sweden surrounded by the most beautiful landscapes in the world, as well as cities with amazing architecture. His father was a painter and an architect, and he was raised to respect and appreciate the beauty around me. Jens came to Rhode Island as a young adult and was drawn to the enchanting coastlines, forests, and mountains in New England.
Jens uses his art to capture his memories of Scandinavia as well as all that what he has experienced, and continues to experience, throughout New England. To him it is a privilege to be an artist, and he strive to use color, texture, and shadows to express his love of and enchantment with the natural world.

We welcome back master artist Linda Miller for a two-day spring 2022 workshop dedicated to rosemaling.
This 2-day class will focus on centuries old art of Rosemaling; flora rose painting and acanthus ornament. Linda will have projects for sale however special projects are welcome provided by students and approved by instructor.
All projects will be in the period colors using a vast array of motifs and techniques which have evolved down through the ages. Oil paint is highly advised.

The Scandinavian Library presents Helene (2020 – Finland).
Year 1915. Helene Schjerfbeck is a forgotten artist living in the countryside with her elderly mother. Years have passed since her last exhibition, and Helene has continued to paint only for her own passion. Everything changes when an art dealer discovers Helene and her 159 amazing paintings and wants to organize a large solo exhibition. However, the most important moment in Helene’s life is brought on by her encounter with amateur painter Einar Reuter, who is a passionate admirer of Helene’s art. He becomes Helene’s confidante and the unfulfilled love of her life.
Inspired by true events, HELENE describes the life of Finland’s most acclaimed painter Helene Schjerfbeck between 1915-1923.
