Frequently Asked Questions
Does our family need to be Scandinavian?
No! Everyone is welcome to join. Our mission as a cultural center is to bring the best of Nordic arts to all. We are producing a Norwegian play, but nobody involved has to be Norwegian or have any knowledge of Scandinavia. This is an opportunity for cultural exchange!
Can I enroll in just one week, or do I need to sign up for the whole session?
Because we will be working progressively towards a final performance, it is necessary that everyone participate for the full three weeks and not just one or two weeks. Kids will be cast in their roles for the final performance at the beginning of the session.
My child is interested in theater, but doesn’t want to act. Can they participate only backstage?
Of course! We’ll need lots of sets and costumes and crew to do the behind-the-scenes work. Kids can choose to have a small role, a non-speaking role, or no on-stage part if they prefer. We will be playing acting games as activities, however. And everyone will help out backstage as well!
What will a day look like?
You can check out a sample day’s schedule in the “about” to get an idea. Every day will involve some mix of rehearsals, games, and work on sets, costumes, and props. Everything is designed to be fun and engaging! We will have a 45-minute lunch daily as well as two shorter breaks for snacks and playing outside or relaxing.
Do you serve lunch, or do I need to pack a lunch?
Up to you! You can pack a lunch for your child to bring, or for an extra fee your child can eat lunch here. We will have snacks available for everyone, but if there is a dietary restriction or concern you can pack specific snacks. Email caroline@scandicenter.org if you have questions about food.
My child would like to participate, but the cost is too high for our family. Are there discounts available?
We are very happy to offer several full scholarships to qualifying participants. The scholarship covers the program in its entirety as well as daily lunches if you wish. If you qualify for EBT or WIC you automatically qualify for a scholarship, which are awarded on a first-come first-serve basis. Contact caroline@scandicenter.org if you have questions or aren’t sure if you’re eligible.
What is the Scandinavian Living Center?
The Scandinavian Cultural Center & Library is connected to the Scandinavian Living Center, an assisted living home for seniors. The living center is founded on the belief that one’s age should not prevent them from participating in their community and is modeled from the way senior care is done in Scandinavian countries. There are 40 apartments and a team of round-the-clock staff on site. The living center won’t affect the workshop much as we’ll be using separate spaces, but it does have some benefits, such as a licensed nurse who will be available, and a group of residents who will be very excited to see a play! For more information, you can view the living center’s website and check out the “location” section of the summer workshop page.
