Finns Unite to Celebrate Their Heritage Exotic Finnish-American music often filled the air when the Rockport Legion Band played on breezy summer Sunday nights in the 1930s-50s. Now many of the best Finn-Am tunes from that era are returning for one night only.
On July 21 at 7:00 p.m. acclaimed guest conductor Paul Niemisto will raise his baton to lead the members of Rockport's community band and guest musicians in a free, outdoor program of Finnish-American music to delight a diverse, twentieth-first century audience.
The music is sure to evoke nostalgia among Cape Ann’s Finns and all Finns who attend. Importantly, it provides a rare opportunity for this now assimilated group to unite in one location in demonstration of their numbers and in celebration of their proud, shared heritage. That night, the band pays tribute to its 32 charter members. Most of these original volunteers grew up in Finnish homes, some in Finland itself.
This concert is a thank you gesture to that earlier generation. Plan to gather around the bandstand at Back Beach in Rockport on July 21 at 7:00 p.m.-- or come early with family and friends to picnic seaside ahead of the concert. Bring your chairs, blankets and kanteles.
